Born today in 1929 he is the only driver to win the 24 hours of Le Mans, The Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 (1966). He only had 3 starts (1966-’67-’68) winning in his first year while leading ten laps. (This was also Chief Mechanic George Bignotti’s third of 7 Indy victories) The next 2 years saw mechanical woes keep him from finishing but he did have a middle of the front row start in 1968. I always liked his unique helmet design too.

96th Indianapolis 500-May 26, 2013
The Worlds Biggest One day sporting eventMay 26th, 2013
5 days to go.

My Son Graham, was named after Graham Hill when he was born in 1984. He’s 29 now and a FAA Air Traffic Controller in the Midwest Flight Control Center here in Indianapolis.
George Bignotti was A.J. Foyt’s chief mechanic in 1961 and 1964. So, 1966 was Bignotti’s third of seven Indy 500 wins.
Right you are JD. Thank you for the heads up!
Happy to help…
I’ve spent decades reading, thinking and dreaming about the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
So, it’s good to be able to put some of that knowledge to use.
Anyway, thanks for the web site.
It’s nice to connect with other fans that enjoy the Speedway as much as I do.
