Born August 4, 1932, Joe Leonard came from motorcycle racing ranks. He competed in 9 Indianapolis 500’s winning one pole and finishing as high as 3rd twice (67 and 72)
he led a total of 52 laps in 2 events (68 and 71) and was always a fan favorite. His pole position start came in the wedge STP Turbine. He dropped out of the 1968 race after leading 31 laps when a fuel shaft broke.
