September 7, 2012-AJ Foyt wins the Hoosier 100 in 1968

As a kid we looked forward to and dreaded this time of year. Labor day meant, back to school:( but there was the US Nationals at IRP AND The World’s Richest Dirt Race The Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fair Grounds:)

This was back when if you wanted to be the Indy Car National Champion you had to run some dirt races because they had points that counted towards that title.

On this day in 1968 AJ won with Mario Andretti, George Snider, Gary Bettenhausen and Bill Vukovich Jr rounding out the top 5. BTW: Al Unser finished 15th, Bobby Unser was 16th, both due to mechanical failures and Lloyd Ruby missed the 18 car field because he was too slow!
