How about 2 in a day. Last year they did it at Texas, I thought it was cool. We’ve already talked about a time they did it in Indy at Indianapolis Raceway Park (see July 27, 2012 post) Talk is we might see more twin race weekends in 2013 so I thought we’d visit an event held at Donnybrook Speedway, now called Brainerd Intl. Raceway, in Brainerd, MN. on this day in 1969. Two heats of 96.322 miles were contested on the 2.833 mile road course.
Heat 1 saw 19 cars take the green and was Gordon Johncock coming home the winner with Dan Gurney, Al Unser, Mario Andretti and Swede Savage rounding out the top 5.
Heat 2 had 11 cars answer the bell with the top 2 from the first go round reversing the finishing order. Dan Gurney won this one with Johncock, Andretti again 3rd, Mark Donahue 4th and Mike Mosley 5th.
