Yesterday’s “who is this” was Lou Palmer. Lou was on the IMS Radio Network for 30 years, the last 2 as the anchor. His first race was 1958 when Sid Collins put him out in turn 3 “because nothing happens out there”. That year a 15 car pile up on the 1st lap blocked the track and took the life of Pat O’Connor. His hourly track reports from the Speedway in May where works of art. In a minute he could bring you up to date on the goings on at the Speedway and never sound hurried or leave anything out. Nice man.
Here’s Lou in victory lane with Bobby Unser
Happy Birthday to the first Indianapolis 500 winner Ray Harroun, born today in Spartansburg, PA. He came out of retirement to drive in the 1st race and never competed again.
