Born today in 1950 in Louisville, KY. Danny had the famous “spin and win” in the 1985 500. He had 12 starts from 1982 to 1995 with 6 top 10 starts and 5 top ten finishes as well as leading 3 races for a total of 162 laps. He also competed in the first Brickyard 400 in 1994 starting 26th and finishing 33rd.
Danny’s win was another of the 15 Roger Penske has in the 500
Very lucky semitalented driver. Never thought too much about his career. Suspected he was not going to turn out “one of the great ones” in the business. Would have liked to see him try his hand at midgets and sprints. Gary Bettenhausen never won the 500, nor did Gary’s Dad, but they both were far superior race car drivers than Danny.
